CANYON HIGH SCHOOL ENSEMBLES

Wind Ensemble

Symphonic Winds

Symphonic Band

Concert Band

The Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, and Symphonic Band are advanced bands open to students in grades 10 - 12 in the fall through audition.  Students in grade 9 may be selected to move into an advanced band at semester based on individual achievement and ensemble needs.  The Freshmen Honor Band is the top ensemble for 9th grade students in the fall, and combines top-achieving students entering CHS for the first time and prepares them for the transition into high school band.  The concert band includes students in grades 9 - 12 that need more fundamental training in musicianship, tone production, and technique development.

Cougar Marching Band:

The "Pride of Cougar Country" is made up of students in all five concert bands.  All students participate in the marching band.  Students are assigned a marching band assignment that determines their level of participation in the program

Color Guard:

The Color Guard is made up of students in grades 9 - 12.  Utilizing dance fundamentals and equipment techniques (flag, rifles, sabres, etc.), the color guard is part of the Cougar Marching Band in the fall.  There are (2) winter guards in the spring semester where the color guard performs independently in competition.

Percussion:

The CHS Band program offers a comprehensive percussion studies program that trains all percussionists to be well-rounded musicians.  In addition to performing as marching band musicians and concert band musicians, the percussion program offers multiple percussion ensemble opportunities, solo development opportunities, and a steel drum band.  The percussion program has an annual night of percussion event that features multiple ensembles, soloists, and guest artists.

Jazz Band:

The CHS Band offers jazz band in the curriculum.  The ensemble performs at community functions and at festival events.  The jazz band is open to traditional jazz instrumentation.

Applied Music and Music Theory:

A goal of the CHS Band program is to train independent musicians.  Through an applied music curriculum and available training in music theory, students can pursue advanced study in music to potentially continue as music scholars beyond high school.
